About this training

Fundamentals of Combustion is a 2-part course that provides the learner with the necessary underpinning knowledge for operating these technologies more confidently and optimising thermal efficiency. The learning is also helpful to maintaining environmental compliance throughout operational periods and to improving reliability and availability.

Module 2 builds on the learning from module 1 providing learners with the underpinning knowledge and scientific understanding to be able to achieve improved overall plant performance in terms of efficiency and environmental compliance.

• Understand what happens during a combustion reaction and what affects combustion and thermal efficiency

Scene 1:  Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

  • Introduction to –
  • a range of chemical elements inc, C,H,S,O,N
  • molecules, molecular bonding, and single element molecules
  • compounds inc. water, Co, CO2, SOx and methane
  • Mixtures; oil and water, gases
  • Summary of elements, compounds and mixtures
  • Example of air as a mixture and oxygen/nitrogen percentages

Scene 2: Basic Chemistry

  • Using singe molecule of methane as example
  • Chemical reactions (reactants to products)
  • Combustion balance for single methane molecule
  • Balanced equation of complete combustion
  • Animation of boiler gas flame and products of combustion
  • Equilibrium equations – examples and exercises
  • Air/fuel ratios – examples and exercises

Scene 3: Boiler Efficiency (focus on combustion efficiency)

  • Combustion efficiency vs thermal efficiency
  • Stoichiometry and efficiency curve
  • Optimised air and importance of excess air but not too much
  • Excess fuel and excess air comparisons

Scene 4: Boiler Efficiency (focus on thermal efficiency)

  • Explanation of thermal efficiency and energy transfer
  • Affects on thermal efficiency with excess air
  • Excess air Vs temperature graph
  • Implications of tube fouling on thermal and hence boiler efficiency

Scene 5: Controlling Emissions

  • Monitoring and controlling emissions
  • Volumetric exhaust flow monitoring
  • Oxygen content in the exhaust
  • Controlling efficiency by excess oxygen monitoring
  • Stack monitoring
  • Analysis of exhaust gas and introduction to SOx, NOx, particulates in an applied setting
